Secrets to Success: Create a Road Map
Improving your skills on the court takes a lot of time and effort. Learning that sport from the right person will transform your skill set and allow you to work more efficiently. As a player growing up, I have tried many drills and programs. I have gone to clinics and done various drills without having a true sense of what was going to get me better besides “hard work”.
The Benefits of A Structured Basketball Training Plan
It is incredibly vital to have a plan if you want to become an elite player. This plan allows us to see if we are missing any key components or if we need to alter something if it isn’t working. Your body needs a consistent stimulus to be able to adapt so that you can then progress.
Figuring out what you need to work on
The first step is crucial and often overlooked. You need to know where you are going before you head on the journey. Having vague answers of shoot better or score more doesn’t do anyone any favors. We need to get down into the details. What happens when you play that limits you the most? What does the other team try to do to you to make you ineffective? It is also helpful to figure out what you are known for. What type of player? Shooter? Slasher? Passer? Defender? Whatever it is this will help guide us to see if any weaknesses are important. If you are a small pass first point guard, getting better low post defense might not make a huge difference. But if you are a 3 point shooter but lose the ball if you take one dribble, it would be helpful to develop some moves that exploit your shooting ability.
Outlining the plan
Now that we know the skill we want to work on, we need to structure a plan that attacks it from all angles. We also need to include other important aspects to allow you to develop in all ways possible. For example, if you are a small shooter who is looking to get better at driving and finishing through contact we are going to address this with on the court skills and things in the weight room. We will want to work on having moves that already exploit your skills. This includes pump fakes, backdoor cuts, and extended dribbles off a screen. Then we look towards your finishing skills.
To capitalize on your good shooting we will work on dribble pullups, floaters, and extended lay ups. Then to work on creating space we will need to teach you how to create contact and get teh defender on your hip since you are at a height disadvantage. We will progress through this by going against no defense then slowly making it more reactive so that you will be ready for game situations. A lot of the weight room work will be building foundational strength, improving your ability to decelerate, and your acceleration.
Testing and monitoring
I can create what seems like the greatest plan ever invented but if we aren’t monitoring your progress then we won’t know how well it is working. We will need to come up with some baseline tests that match up with whatever your goal is. This could be physical like your vertical jump height or your one rep max squat. This coule also be skill based by monitoring your shooting percentages on a certain drill or test. Continued monitoring is crucial to see if we need alter anything or maybe keep some drills in for longer because they are working well.
Roadblocks
No matter what you plan there will always be obstacles on this journey. Maybe you couldn’t sleep the night before your workout, you got sick for a week, you injured your hand playing pickup. Whatever may have happened the most important thing to remember is to keep your rhythm. Don’t try to makeup workouts or do double workouts because you missed one. Don;t force yourself to do a workout when you can barely get out of bed. You need to listen to your body and adapt. Reduce the length of the workout if you are feeling crappy. Work around injuries if you are able to get them checked out if they are stickign around. The tortoise will always win, play the long game.
